Pianist and Bandoneonista Winnie Cheung has been performing tango in the U.S., Argentina, and East Asia for a number of years. She was a member of the band Cuarteto Tanguero, and more recently the duo Ben & Winnie. In the latter case, she and her colleague Ben Bogart used tango to spread the word about climate change, performing in major venues across the U.S and Argentina. She currently runs an organization called Tango With Winnie, a large-scale project involving performance collaborations, community outreach, education, and social awareness. She frequently plays in the U.S. and Buenos Aires with many of the top tango musicians of today and maintains a very active touring schedule.
Violinist Christine Brebes moved to Buenos Aires in 2002 to learn playing different tango orchestra styles alongside the living masters in La Orquesta Escuela de Tango de Emilio Balcarce. She has dedicated her life to performing and teaching, and has traveled with tango shows such as Tango X2, Tango Dreams, Tango Fire, and Tango Lovers to play in many beautiful and historic theatres around the world such as Japan, Italy, England, China, Colombia, Peru, Uruguay, Chile, and the US. To hear a bit more about Christine’s life, she was filmed for an Argentine public television series in 2009 (subs in English) about the role of immigrants in tango.
Winnie and Christine are prepared to talk with your students about tango in the present, its role as a vehicle for activism and social change, and the changing culture in both Buenos Aires and the U.S., among many other possible topics. They are also free to perform a short concert as well. If you think that your students would be interested, please feel free to reach out to Winnie Cheung directly: win109@gmail.com
